Deep Roots Market Is Open For Business!!!

Cheers For The Brand New Deep Roots Market!!!

by | on March 21, 2013

IT’S SPRING TIME!!!  Fresh new energy is in the air, and there’s SOOOOOO MUCH going on!!!  New projects have been born, and major accomplishments are revealing themselves at every turn.  (Bout time, right?) LOL . . . We now get to reap the rewards of LOADS of “hard work”, and flowing with the challenges that have been presented to us with all of these intense planetary energies we have been making our way through.  But don’t stop now!  There’s even more fruition coming as the days get warmer and the Sun continues to fuel our fires!
I’ve got TONS of stuff I COULD talk about, but I have to dedicate today’s blog to something that is truly a DREAM COME TRUE, especially for those of us that are familiar with the history of Greensboro, North Carolina!
I personally had the pleasure of working at local health-food co-op, Deep Roots Market, from 2007 to 2008, before my journey took a major turn due to my OWN health challenges (another story entirely), but I literally don’t have the words to describe what it felt like to walk into the BRAND SPANKING NEW location, right on the edge of downtown Greensboro, on their GRAND OPENING yesterday, Wednesday March 20th, 2013, the FIRST DAY OF SPRING!!!  And not only was it perfect timing based on the yearly cycle, but I was also informed by a dear Astrologer friend of mine, who I hadn’t seen in years, that part of the decision for the opening strategy centered around yesterday’s Grand Fire Trine in the sky!  (Somebody knows their stuff! *wink*)
For me, it was like a huge family reunion of folks that genuinely care about the well being of the community, local businesses, local economic strength, and . . . well, let’s just be real here . . . the PEOPLE!  I literally walked around the store for HOURS, catching up with friends and health-food family before I was even able to decide what I was going to snack on for lunch.  The energy inside is AMAZING, providing everything from tons of fresh organic produce, to a HUGE bulk item section, larger departments than before, wide aisles (everyone who is familiar with the previous store appreciates that, I KNOW), a salad bar, hot bar, comfortable eating area, a community room, and even MORE friendly service than before from people who actually care!  If you’re in the Greensboro area, you definitely wanna check this out if you haven’t already!  I know I’ll be there often!

Sneak peek: The new Deep Roots Market in Greensboro

Hammers pounded, shelves slid into place and products were placed onto shelves as the Deep Roots Market team worked to ready the Greensboro store’s new location for its soft open Wednesday.

The specialty organic and local foods grocery cooperative is moving from its current location on 3728 Spring Garden St., where it has been since 1990, to its new spot at 600 N. Eugene St. downtown.

Deep Roots’ soft open on Wednesday precedes the invitation-only ribbon cutting on April 19 and the grand opening celebration on April 20, which will feature a reveal of a public art project by local sculptor Jim Gallucci.

Many of the staffers working to get the store up and running workers hailed from food co-ops in other cities as representatives of the National Co-Op Grocers Association, the national business services cooperative for retail food co-ops across the country.

Shoppers do not have to be member-owners of the co-op to buy groceries.

The larger store and more visible location will allow Deep Roots to broaden its loyal, local customer base to new shoppers in the Irving Park and Fisher Park neighborhoods as well as downtown residents in the Greenway at Fisher Park apartments, the Lofts at Greensborough Court and CityView Apartments at Southside.

Deep Roots has faced a long and winding path toward landing a downtown location.

The store first launched as a cooperative grocery in 1976. General Manager Joel Landau first announced the intent to move from Spring Garden Street in July 2000, citing lack of space, but a string of financial difficulties made that move impossible.

But the Greensboro City Council in January 2012 approved a $100,000 loan to the developers for infrastructure improvements. Construction began in August and the store is finally almost ready to open.
